Spring Replacement

A broken spring is one of the most common reasons a garage door stops working. We replace torsion and extension springs and restore safe, balanced operation.

Signs of a Broken Spring

Springs counterbalance the weight of the door, making it possible for the opener (or you) to lift it. When a spring breaks, the door becomes very heavy and the opener can't do its job. Here's what to look for:

  • Door won't open — opener runs but door stays down
  • Loud bang from the garage (often heard at night)
  • Door feels very heavy when lifted manually
  • Door opens only a few inches then stops
  • Visible gap in the spring coil
  • One side of the door hangs lower than the other
  • Cables hanging loose or off the drum

Springs are under significant tension and should only be replaced by a trained technician with the right tools. If you suspect a broken spring, leave the door in place and call us.

What Happens During a Service Visit

1

Inspection

We assess the spring type, size, and condition, along with the cables, drums, and hardware.

2

Spring selection

Springs are sized to the door's weight and height. Using the correct spring matters for safe, balanced operation.

3

Replacement

We replace the spring (or springs) and check cable condition. On torsion systems, both springs are typically replaced at the same time if one has broken.

4

Balance check

After replacement, we test the door's balance and adjust the opener's force settings if needed.
